On first hearing the term ‘linear drumming’ you might imagine a group of drummers playing in a line, like a military marching band, or drummers in the cadets. But that is something else (it’s called “Drumline”). So no, that’s not what linear drumming is all about. Linear drumming is when the notes you play on the drum kit are all in a line. No two drum sounds are played at the same time.

Linear drumming can be used to create some very interesting patterns, and the linear approach to playing drums poses new coordination challenges for any beginner drummer.

By the end of this introductory course, learners will understand linear grooves and fills, and be able to play a range of linear patterns in different musical contexts.

Course Summary:

  • Introduction to linear grooves
  • Linearisation
  • Linear drumming with 8th notes
  • Dynamics within linear patterns
  • Mixed subdivisions for linear grooves
  • Linear fills and licks

Course level: Beginner

At Beginner level, learners will gain an introduction to the drums, working through the fundamental concepts and skills. Lessons are guided by the tutor, but will be tailored to the individual learner’s tastes, level of technical skill, and how the content relates to real musical situations.
